Sculpting Science
School of Art professor Susan Beiner’s collaborative ceramics course brings together students from the Herberger Institute and ASU’s School of Life Sciences. Students are asked to bring a specimen into class, which is then photographed with an electron microscope. The students use those images as a source of inspiration to build ceramic pieces, and the pieces are showcased in the “Sculpting Science” exhibition.
Galbut Prize
MFA painting and drawing student Aubrey Zwickel won the 2022 Galbut Prize. Martin and Cynthia Galbut are artists and art collectors whose love of art spans throughout history from Asian Art to American Tonalism and Contemporary Western American Landscape painting. Each year the Galburt Prize is awarded to an outstanding work created by a student in the School of Art. The competition includes a $1,800 prize juried by a rotating member of the community. Rebecca Rothman, director of Public Art for the City of Tempe, juried this year’s competition.
Emerging artists
In Fall 2021, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) presented works by emerging Phoenix-based artists younger than, or near, the age of 30 in a group show titled “Forever Becoming: Young Phoenix Artists.” All 11 artists featured in the exhibition were alumni or faculty in the School of Art. Featured artists included Mia B. Adams, Merryn Omotayo Alaka, Vincent Chung, Steffi Faircloth, Sam Frésquez, Estephania González, Lena Klett, Cydnei Mallory, Brianna Noble, Lily Reeves and Papay Solomon.

Animation award
Sujin Kim, assistant professor of animation in the School of Art, won the Gold medal at the 48th Student Academy Awards in the Domestic Animation category with her animated film “Unforgotten.” She accepts the award and talks about her film at the 16-minute mark of the Student Academy Awards ceremony video.
Circle of Influence
The School of Art’s Northlight Gallery honored Arizona State University Regents Professor Mark Klett for 40 years of service to the university with an exhibition titled “Circle of Influence.” Klett, who retired this year, started teaching at ASU in 1982 when he joined the staff as a master printer before later joining the faculty to teach photography. More than 60 BFA and MFA alumni who were mentored by Klett during their time at ASU were invited to have their work represented. Their graduation dates range from the mid-1980s to 2021. Most of the work in the show has been donated to Northlight Gallery and will become part of the Mark Klett Archive. Read a Q&A with Klett.
